Good Putting is a State of Mind

There's nothing really hard about putting. The average hacker has the physical skill needed to make a ball roll ten feet on the line they intend to roll it on. It is the mental side of putting that lacks for most golfers.

Too many golfers, especially the ones who play once or twice a week, are focused on making a good putting stroke. They assume, I guess, that by making a good stroke they will hit a good putt. Sounds reasonable.

But really, putting is not about making a good stroke. The best way to putt badly is to focus on a stroke you never get to practice. A golfer is far better off to focus their full attention on hitting the ball on the proper line.

Is it really important how good your stroke is if it gets the ball started on line every time? And aren't you far more likely to hit the ball on the line if that is what you focus on the most?

Think back to your best putting day. You will likely remember how the line just jumped out at you. You could see every break and knew it was right. But you probably don't remember how the stroke felt. You probably have no mechanical memories at all of your best days on the green.

That's because they come from the mind, not the stroke. Good putting is a state of mind. For most it comes and goes on its own will. Golfers tend to search for the physical key to their putting stroke while ignoring the mental side that is more important for putting a golf ball into a hole consistently.

Putting is just like any other target game. You will only succeed once you get past the technique and learn to actually play it. The vast majority of all golfers never learn to play the game of putting. They just keep aimlessly searching for the perfect stroke.
